Credit Card EMI vs Personal Loan: Which is Cheaper?

A practical India-focused comparison of credit card EMI and personal loan cost, including interest, GST, processing fees and flexibility.

The short answer
Credit card EMI is usually convenient for a single purchase, while a personal loan may be cheaper for larger amounts or longer repayment periods. The cheaper option depends on the interest rate, processing fee, GST, tenure and whether you can prepay without heavy charges.

What to compare first
Do not compare only the monthly EMI. A card EMI can look small because it is tied to one purchase and often shown inside the card app. A personal loan may show a higher EMI, but the rate may be lower and the repayment terms may be clearer. Compare total interest, GST on interest, processing fee, GST on the fee and final total payable.

When credit card EMI can make sense
It can work for a smaller purchase such as a phone, laptop, appliance or travel booking when the tenure is short and the processing fee is low. It is also useful when the conversion is instant and you do not want a separate loan application. But check whether a discount is removed, whether the offer is truly no-cost, and whether GST is charged separately.

When personal loan can be better
A personal loan may be better when the purchase amount is large, the tenure is longer or you need money for multiple expenses. It may also offer clearer foreclosure and prepayment rules. The trade-off is that approval takes more effort and a loan enquiry may be part of the process.

A simple decision rule
Use credit card EMI for convenience only after checking the actual total cost. Use a personal loan when the rate and fees are clearly lower, especially for larger amounts. If both costs are close, choose the option with better flexibility and less risk to your monthly cash flow.
